KSI Korean Education Center in Thailand visits middle and high school in Thailand and holds Samulnori class
> Traditional Korean music expert from Korea gives samulnori lecture to middle and high school students in Thailand
> Spreading traditional Korean culture to Thai middle and high school students through samulnori classes that are not easily accessible
KSI Korean Education Center in Thailand conducted a samulnori class from January 24 to 26 at Triamudomsuksa Pattanakarn Pathumthani School as part of the "Sejong Culture Academy" program, which involves Korean cultural experts visiting KSI locations abroad to provide high-quality Korean cultural classes.
KSI Korean Education Center in Thailand accepted applications from Triamudomsuksa Pattanakarn Pathumthani School, targeting middle and high school Thai students with a high interest in Korean culture.
The class was given to approximately 60 high school major students, divided into groups of 20, for four sessions each day for three days. Under the guidance of Yoon Yeo-ju, an artistic director of the Bupyeong-gu Pungmul Team from Korea, students learned the basic rhythms of samulnori, playing janggu (slim waist drum), buk (drum), and jing (gong). They also made traditional masks using hanji, and learned the basic movements of talchum (mask dance), and learned and enjoyed an unfamiliar Korean traditional play called "beonadolligi.”
Some students successfully mastered the challenging beonadolligi, and those with talents in janggu and jing were particularly impressive. One student, who loves Korea so much that she gave herself the Korean name "Ye-eun," received great praise from the instructor for her excellent performance in janggu and beonadolligi. She expressed her appreciation, saying, "Through this traditional play class, I have developed a keen interest in the Korean language and culture, and I would love to learn more. I hope such opportunities come again.”
Moon Il-jin, a teacher at Triamudomsuksa Pattanakarn Pathumthani School, shared his thoughts, saying, "Samulnori is less accessible in Thailand compared to popular Korean culture like K-pop. I really wanted to give students the opportunity to experience traditional plays. I am delighted that we were able to conduct this class. I would like to express my deep gratitude to the officials of KSIF, who have provided a sense of pride and honor to me as a Korean. I would also like to thank Triamudomsuksa Pattanakarn Pathumthani School and local Korean language teachers, who helped prepare for the event.”
