The King Sejong Institute Foundation(President Lee Hai-young, hereinafter referred to as the KSIF) held the
preliminary rounds of the '2024 KSI Korean Speaking and Writing Contest' at 248 KSIs in 85 countries worldwide
from May 15th, in commemoration of the 627th anniversary of 'King Sejong's birthday.'
Every year on May 15, known as 'King Sejong's Birthday,' KSIF has been organizing the preliminary rounds of KSI
Korean Speaking and Writing Contest to honor the great teacher of the people who created Hangul, King Sejong's
intentions, along with Korean learners worldwide, allowing participants to showcase their Korean language skills
honed over time.
Starting from its inception in 2014 with 180 participants from 13 countries and 22 KSIs, the 'KSI Korean
Speaking and Writing Contest' has grown to become a competition involving over 200,000 foreign Korean learners
in 2024. Not only KSI students but also foreign Korean learners from anywhere can participate.
The contest preliminaries are divided into speaking and writing sections. Participants can choose from the
following topics for this year's speaking section: 'My Most Impressive Moment,' 'Special Korean Culture I
Experienced,' and for the writing section: 'What I Gained from Learning Korean,' 'First Impressions and Images
of Korea.'
This year, following the preliminary rounds starting on May 15, the final rounds will be held in July and
August. Those selected in the preliminary rounds will have the opportunity to advance to the final rounds and be
recognized as excellent KSI learners. In October, during Korean Language Day Week, they will participate in the
'2024 KSI Excellent Learner Invitational Training' held in Korea, where they can experience Korean culture. The
final 20 learners selected through the preliminary and final rounds (10 in the speaking section and 10 in the
writing section) will compete in the final round of the '2024 KSI Korean Speaking and Writing Contest' on
October 7, 2024. The ultimate winners selected through the preliminary and final rounds will be offered the
opportunity to participate in a language training program at domestic universities in 2025.
