The King Sejong Institute Foundation(hereafter referred to as the KSIF) held a public workshop on August 30 to
expand opportunities for Korean language instructors to utilize the metaverse and educational technology
(Edutech).
The Metaverse KSI, which officially began operation in February 2023, serves as a “real-time Korean language
communication platform” where learners worldwide can experience Korean language and culture without the
constraints of time and space. It currently offers intermediate and advanced Korean speaking classes.

This workshop was organized to provide Korean language instructors with an opportunity to experience the
somewhat unfamiliar Metaverse KSI and share case studies of the classes held within the platform. It was
conducted both in-person and online, allowing participation from Korean language instructors around the world.
The in-person event took place at the CKL Enterprise Support Center in Jung-gu, Seoul, while the virtual event
was held at the Metaverse KSI Auditorium (https://zep.us/@ksif/yPB1NY). A total of 468 Korean language
instructors who were interested in utilizing the metaverse and educational technology for Korean classes
participated (36 in-person and 432 online).
The workshop began with an expert lecture on “Prospects for Utilizing Edutech and the Metaverse,” which
discussed case studies and the future outlook for metaverse use in foreign language education. This was followed
by sessions introducing the “Metaverse KSI and its Korean Language Classes,” “Examples of Metaverse Korean
Conversation Classes,” and a hands-on “Metaverse KSI Classroom Creation Workshop,” showcasing actual class
examples and practical instruction. In particular, the hands-on lecture, where participants used ZEP, the
platform employed by Metaverse KSI, to create their own metaverse classrooms alongside an expert, offered an
excellent opportunity for instructors to experience Korean language teaching through the metaverse.

Additionally, an exhibition space outside the venue for the in-person workshop showcased various educational
materials developed by the KSIF. Participants could explore textbooks used in Metaverse Korean conversation
classes, such as 〈King Sejong Institute Practical Korean〉 and 〈King Sejong Institute Korean〉. They also had a
chance to check out the AI teacher featured across different parts of Metaverse KSI. Notably, participants
could experience the newly released integrated Korean learning app, “Mobile KSI,” and the online web
entertainment content ‘Short-form Battles! Everyone's K-Culture’, both available through Metaverse KSI.

Lee Hai-young, President of KSIF, stated, “It is meaningful that KSIF is introducing a workshop on Korean
language education utilizing the metaverse at a time when the use of edutech is gaining attention within the
Korean language education field.” She added, “Going forward, KSIF will continue to strive to lead Korean
language education by integrating various educational technologies in line with the latest trends in education.”
