Sejong Institutes Around the World

Starting in March this year, the King Sejong Institute Foundation (KSIF) will send 17
interns to King Sejong Institutes (KSIs) around the world to teach classes on Korean arts.
The group of 17 interns consists of students majoring in arts at 14 colleges and
universities in Korea, including Korea University, Seoul Institute of the Arts, Ewha Womans
University, and Korea National University of Arts. For over 100 days, they will teach classes
that introduce Korean arts, including K-pop songs and dances, and traditional Korean
dance and music, including samulnori, as well as K-films, K-dramas, and K-food.
Ahn Jin, a graduate student majoring in Korean education at Chonnam National
University, expressed her ambition to join the group to promote the Korean aesthetic and
beauty in France, the nation of gourmet food.
The KSIF plans to send the 17 interns it has recruited to KSIs around the world starting in
early March, after the recruits complete their training in safety and security overseas and
teaching and communication skills. The interns will teach classes at 17 KSIs in 14 nations,
including Auburn (Alabama, the United States) and Moscow (Russia).
Also, during the first half of this year, the KSIF will recruit an additional 45 interns to teach
Taekwondo to KSI learners around the world.
According to KSIF President Kang Hyounhwa, experts in Korean art education are in high
demand overseas, thanks to the popularity of the Korean Wave. She added that the KSIF
plans to increase the number of Korean language and culture teachers in other nations as
part of its effort to increase jobs overseas.
Since 2013, the KSIF has been running the King Sejong Institute Culture Intern program to
spread the Korean language and culture globally by teaming up with universities in Korea.
Under the program last year, the KSIF sent 41 culture interns to 24 KSIs in 17 nations.
